Soon after Blood Omen was released, Silicon Knights break off with Crystal Dynamics after a legal battle for the rights of Blood Omen, won by this last one. Crystal Dynamics then started the design of a sequel of Blood Omen. Amy Hennig replaced Denis Dyack as director and Eidos Interactive replaced Activision as publisher.
In 1999 Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver became the second title of the franchise and the first 3D game of the saga. It featured a non-linear huge world, a background load between levels and the same great voice acting as the first episode.
This time, Kain is pushed into the background to introducing a new protagonist. Sortly before conquered the world, Kain snared six souls from the underworld who became his vampiric lieutenants, and among them were Raziel, the first of all them. Centuries later Raziel dared to challenge his master, reason why Kain ordered to throw Raziel into the abyss for his eternal damnation.
A long time after, Raziel back to life thanks to a misterious beign that identified itself as the "Engine of life". This entity explain Raziel the reason of his rebirth: to purge the remain vampires in Nosgoth to his souls could reintegrate into the "Wheel of Fate", specially the Kain's soul.
